Center for European Studies
In order to achieve the goals set out in its mission statement, Hudson's Center for European Studies aims to examine the EU-US relationship in the context of four overarching areas: (1) religion, culture and society; (2) economic policy, trade and regulation; (3) strategy, foreign policy and defense; and (4) global governance, national sovereignty and democracy.
Our programs to advance these objectives would include the following:
- A monthly program of Euro-American lectures and debates, subsequently published online and in Hudson papers, with high-profile speakers such as Nicolas Sarkozy, Antonio Martino, and Radek Sikorski.
- Panels on trade and regulatory disputes, especially cultural trade issues, in cooperation with Hudson Senior Fellow Irwin Stelzer, that would draw well-known figures from Hollywood into the Washington policy debate.
- Seminars on the founding fathers of Atlanticism from Adenauer to Raymond Aron, given by those distinguished public intellectuals—Kenneth Minogue, Joe Joffe, Lord (Brian) Griffiths, Wilfred McClay, Robert Conquest—who could also contribute personal knowledge of the giants they were discussing.
- Showing popular films, videos, plays, etc., followed by debates and commentary, on current social and political issues such as “Munich.” We would work closely with Hudson scholars William Schambra and Amy Kass on this.
- Pizza Politics. Distinguished Hudson speakers would attend a second meeting with younger Washington people (junior Hill staffers, journalists, Ph.D. students, think tank interns, etc.) for lively discussions over pizza and colas.
- A Grand Atlantic Prize awarded every five years, for the European or American who has done most for Transatlantic Relations.
- A Hudson European Journalism Fellows Program that would invite an editor, op-ed page editor, network news editor, etc. to spend a period of time—probably a month, given the pressures of journalism—simply stationed at Hudson.
- A Center for European Studies website that would include a steady stream of news and news features by special arrangement with UPI.
- A Hudson collective blog of specialists, continually updated, on Euro-American issues across both continents.
- A cooperative network of foreign policy think tanks across Europe. They would publish each other’s papers, both electronically and on paper, coordinate research, hold joint conferences, and provide Hudson visitors with temporary accommodation, research assistance, and a platform abroad.
